What once were vices are now Habits [Stay High]

en.wikipedia.org

Uh-uh uh-uh uh-uh
I eat my dinner in my bathtub
Then I go to sex clubs
Watching freaky people getting it on
It doesn’t make me nervous
If anything I’m restless
Yeah I’ve been around and I’ve seen it all

I get home, I got the munchies
Binge on all my Twinkies
Throw up in the tub, then I go to sleep
And I drank up all my money
Tasted kind of lonely
You’re gone and I got to stay high
All the time to keep you off my mind, ooh ooh
High all the time to keep you off my mind, ooh ooh
Spend my days locked in a haze
Trying to forget you babe, I fall back down
Gotta stay high all my life to forget I’m missing you
Pick up daddies at the playground
How I spend my day time
Loosen up the frown, make them feel alive
I make it fast and greasy
I know my way too easy
You’re gone and I got to stay high
All the time to keep you off my mind, ooh ooh
High all the time to keep you off my mind, ooh ooh
Spend my days locked in a haze,
Tryin’ to forget you babe, I fall back down
Got to stay high all my life to forget I’m missing you
Staying in my play pretend
Where the fun ain’t got no end
Oh, can’t go home alone again
Need someone to numb the pain
Oh, staying in my play pretend
Where the fun ain’t got no end
Oh oh can’t go home alone again
Need someone to numb the pain
You’re gone and I got to stay high
All the time to keep you off my mind, ooh ooh
High all the time to keep you off my mind, ooh ooh
Spend my days locked in a haze
Tryin’ to forget you babe, I fall back down
Got to stay high all my life to forget I’m missing you

“Habits (Stay High)” is track #13 on the album Queen of the Clouds. It was written by Tove, Lo / Jerlstroem, Jakob Bo / Soederberg, Ludvig Karl Dagsson / Ledinsky, Daniel Alexander.

I was in the car and going from station to station when I caught the lyrics to this song.  I hope you are not offended; this is the radio version. It is apparently a big hit getting widespread airplay.
I was taken aback, as usual, since I don’t listen to much pop music and get appalled by what people listen to.  The more I listened, it seemed that the music was tonally very sad, depressed almost morbid (read joyless).
I am reminded of past discussions with my kids that my generation had a past also.  Yes, our music was sex-laden and we enjoyed  the insinuation as much as the more blatant content.
But when I heard Tove Lo’s Habits(Stay High), I thought.  This is a new low.  I was told that she is a new “artist”.
I get it, that she, like me, has a right to create art and speak freely.  I get wary when the art is broadcast unimpeded to impressionable young people.  Much like people said about Elvis, I suppose.
But isn’t this the wretchedness that Satan himself would whisper in your daughter’s ear if that were indeed his modus operandi?  Are the record companies not complicit when young people act in accordance with troubling behavior heard in song lyrics?

I have posted the lyrics as well as the songwriters and possibly [hopefully] the producer.  I am posting this note on both blogs and hope that you will protect your children (and yourself) from such irresponsible  ranting.
